In a recent segment examining a new package of bills aimed at regulating artificial intelligence in Illinois, WCIA called on the expertise of Dr. Volodymyr Kindratenko, Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Innovation (CAII) to help explain some of the details behind the legislature.
Dr. Kindratenko noted that while many of the proposed measures could help ensure responsible AI use, some restrictions— even of tasks such as banning teachers from using AI tools for grading—may unintentionally limit efficiency and innovation in education. He emphasized that AI, when used thoughtfully, can support overworked educators and improve consistency in assessment.
Dr. Kindratenko also underscored the importance of regulating AI in ways similar to other high‑trust industries, drawing parallels to pharmaceuticals and aviation, where safety and reliability are essential expectations for the public. At the same time, he cautioned that overly rigid rules could hinder progress in a rapidly evolving field.
