The Center for Artificial Intelligence Innovation (CAII) is proud to celebrate the Visual Nutrition undergraduate research team for earning 3rd place in the Outstanding Undergraduate Research category at the University of Illinois’ Engineering Open House (EOH) 2026.
EOH—one of the nation’s largest and longest‑running student‑led STEM showcases—featured more than 200 exhibits this year. As highlighted in NCSA’s coverage of the event, students across campus shared innovative, hands‑on research with thousands of visitors.
The Visual Nutrition project, a collaboration between CAII and the Personalized Nutrition Initiative, uses AI‑driven food recognition and personalized dietary analysis to help individuals better understand their nutritional habits. Undergraduate contributors from information sciences, computing, engineering, and nutrition have played a central role in developing the app’s architecture, data pipeline, and evidence‑based nutrition guidance.
Their EOH exhibit showcased how interdisciplinary student teams at CAII are advancing real‑world applications of AI for health. The recognition at EOH underscores the project’s creativity, technical rigor, and impact.
