The University of Illinois is embracing a new wave of innovation on campus through Illinois Chat, an AI‑powered platform designed to help instructors better support their students. Created in 2023 by an Illinois student, the tool has quickly grown into a widely used resource across multiple departments.
AI as an educational support tool, not a replacement for instructors or TAs
Developed under the guidance of Dr. Volodymyr Kindratenko, Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Innovation (CAII), Illinois Chat allows instructors to simply drag and drop their course materials into the system. When students ask questions, the platform identifies the most relevant content and directs them to the appropriate section of the course materials.
According to Kindratenko, the goal was never to replace human expertise. “We didn’t want to give direct answers, although it can,” he explained. “We wanted to give students more variety to work with the system to get to the answer themselves.”
By handling routine, repetitive questions, Illinois Chat helps teaching assistants focus on more complex and challenging assignments, improving instructional efficiency and giving students deeper support where it matters most.
Kindratenko sees the platform as a powerful example of the university’s commitment to responsible innovation. “This is an example of innovation that comes out of the university, and it’s very beneficial to the campus and to the bigger community in general,” he said.
As AI continues to evolve, Illinois Chat demonstrates how student‑driven development — supported by CAII — can create practical, trustworthy tools that strengthen learning, expand access, and reflect the university’s leadership in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
